I spoke with one of the investigators on his case. He said that Craig, was interested in theater arts and quite often went to New York City. Also, he quite often jumped on the train and traveled here and there. There was some belief that he may have been involved with drugs, but no proof.

His mother died in 2016, and another brother Alan, died in 1988. He has a surviving sister.

I wish there was more information. How does a hospital lose a patient? Why was he there, did he have injuries? Mental health issues?

It's so sad for his family. I hope he is safe out there.

Nicole, I had orked as a police officer and detective at two VA Medical Centers in Chicago. I have investigated a few missing patients over the almost 20 years.

Patient's leave for a number of reasons. One left the hospital with his girlfriend to go to a Cub's game, another left to pay the rent. They might get upset with their treatment, or don't want to be in the hospital.

In this time frame the hospital staff, were not on top of their responsibility in protecting patients under their care.

If a patient gets treatment at the VA, and sent to a nursing or rehabilitation facility under a VA contract, the VA is still responsible for them.

Many years ago a veteran was sent to a nursing home under a VA contract. He came in for a clinic appointment. He never returned to the nursing home.

We finally tracked him down, to a one room flophouse, with a curtain for a door. He missed his room, instead of a nice clean bed, with three square meals.

As a detective at one VA, we submitted a monthly missing patient report, for a quality control. It looked at the number of patients reported missing, the ward they were on, and a summary of their disappearance.

We were looking for a pattern, such as all the missing patients for a month, were from a particular ward, or ssd's specific time frame. Then the services involved would have to look and see if it was a staff issue.

I could pass along a few, stories of medical and nursing staff not being exactly professional.

One nurse on an orthopedic & rehab floor, would tell me about all the criminals in the various rooms on her ward.

Here are some of my memories of Craig Chiarappa.
My dad taught summers at Wesleyan University in the 1960s. I became friends with Craig who lived a few houses away from me in 1965. I remember playing the game “Skunk” in his back yard while we were drinking “orange dry” soda. We went on a double date to see The Sound of Music. Another recollection stands out. While his parents were away one afternoon, Craig took a set of car keys and practiced backing the Chirappa’s Rambler in and out of their driveway. The Rambler caught the frame on the side of the garage and damaged it. On Aug 19, 2005 my mother and I went to Chiarappa Jewelers at 502 Main St in Middletown. I had not seen Mr Chiarappa in 40 years. I explained who my mother and I were. I told Mr Chiarappa that one thing he would remember was that I was there when Craig drove the Rambler into their garage. He recalled that! I asked him where Craig was and Mr. Chiarappa said “he is gone”. I didn’t ask anymore about that. I did not know of his disappearance until today, August 9 2021. Tom Raub Allentown Pa.

Is there anyone who believes he may have made his way to California by any chance? If so, I always think the Carlos Santana John doe has an uncanny resemblance for this missing person.
