He was assigned to the 236th Military Police Battalion of the Texas National Guard based in San Antonio, Texas. Edward Garcia Jr. was living in Waco, Texas when he went to visit relatives in Alto Bonito, Texas. Edward Garcia Jr. only had $180 in his pocket and did not have any extra clothing with him. Unlike previous trips, the two brothers decided they would leave their location in Matamoros which was about 20 minutes south of Brownsville, Texas at about 2 AM and make the trip back to the United States. According to Ernesto Garcia’s wife, the two men never drove home at night and always waited until the day time to make the drive.
