Reward offered for information on skeletal remains found on Fort Bliss
by Staff Wednesday, November 24th 2021 FORT BLISS, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — The Army is offering a reward for information that helps them identify human remains that were found on Fort Bliss. The human remains were found in Castner Range, Hondo Pass area near the El Paso Border Patrol Station in the northeast on March 18, according to a Fort Bliss news release. It stated that a person walking in the area found the remains and reported them to law enforcement. The remains were discovered above ground. There was no evidence that indicated they had been buried, officials stated. Army officials said although there is one active missing person case at Fort Bliss, initial findings do not indicate the two cases are related. It is believed the remains are a man between the ages of 30 to 40 years old with a height between 5 feet, 7 inches to 6 feet tall. They believe the man went missing and died between 2017 to 2019. The man was possibly wearing black Oakley's glasses, a blue Under Armor jacket, a white shirt, blue denim pants, a black knee brace, a grey sweatshirt, and white and gray “Wolverine” socks, officials stated. A blue Crunch Fitness bag was found with the remains. Officials said there is no danger to area residents or the community. Anyone with information is asked to call the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division at 915-568-1700. A $1,000 reward will be given to anyone who provides information leading to the person's identification. While the girl was found in Texas, a pollen analysis completed on her remains suggests she was from the southwest U.S. or the adjacent region in Mexico. It's even more likely she was from southeast Arizona.

Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office Teams with Othram To Identify a 1987 John DoeAfter 38 years, a man whose remains were found in Tarrant County has been identified as Shirlee Lewis Henkel, born in 1942.
In 2024, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office sent forensic evidence to Othram's laboratory in The Woodlands, Texas in hopes that advanced DNA testing could help identify the man. Othram scientists produced a suitable DNA extract from the remains. A comprehensive DNA profile was then developed for the man using Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing®. Othram's forensic genetic genealogy team then conducted a genealogical search that resulted in new leads, which were provided to law enforcement. These leads enabled a follow-up investigation, allowing investigators to identify potential relatives of the man and it was determined that the unknown man was identified as Shirlee Lewis Henkel who was born on August 14, 1942. Henkel was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who was born in Deloit, Iowa. In 1994, his family held a funeral for him with a gravestone in Saint Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa.
